Tomographic velocity analysis of PP- and PS-waves for VTI media: Field-data application

Mode-converted PS-waves can provide valuable information for anisotropic parameter estimation that cannot be obtained from compressional waves alone. In a previous paper, we developed an efficient tomographic methodology for 2D joint velocity analysis of PP and PS data from VTI (transversely isotropic with a vertical symmetry axis) media. The algorithm is designed to flatten image gathers of PP...

Observations of Azimuthal Anisotropy in Prestack Seismic Data*

A method for displaying prestack seismic data that highlights azimuthal anisotropy is shown. Observations of azimuthal anisotropy in prestack seismic data using this and other methods make it clear that azimuthal anisotropy is observed in all types of seismic data, land, marine and multicomponent and it is widespread, from the shallowest to the deepest reflectors. Consequently, anisotropy must ...

Estimation of Plunge Value in Single- or Multi-Layered Anisotropic Media Using Analysis of Fast Polarization Direction of Shear Waves

Estimation of the fast polarization direction of shear seismic waves that deviate from horizontal axis is a valuable approach to investigate the characteristics of the lower crust and uppermost mantle structures. The lattice preferred orientation of crystals, which is generally parallel to the downward or upward flow of the mantle or crust, is an important reason for the occurrence of fast axis...

Azimuthal anisotropy in the D00 layer beneath the Caribbean

[1] The lowermost mantle beneath Central America has anisotropic seismic velocity structure manifested in shear wave splitting of signals from South American earthquakes recorded at North American broadband recording stations. Prior studies of deep mantle anisotropy in this region have characterized the structure as having vertical transverse isotropy (VTI), which is sufficient to explain a gen...

A Review of Models for Polarimetric Thermal Emissionfrom the Sea Surface

Current models for the microwave polarimetric brightness temperature of the sea surface are reviewed. Results from the physical optics (PO), composite surface, and small slope approximation (SSA) theories are illustrated and compared with an empirical model. All models are shown to predict both first and second harmonic azimuthal variations of sea brightnesses, but the physical effects captured...
